More bad news for the American poor. Congress, which is set to return in early January, is to vote on a bill that makes it much more difficult for the poor to afford food.
Local media are reporting that two senators are finalizing a deal over a bill which would cut more than 8 billion dollars in food stamp benefits for the needy. The bill by a Republican and a Democrat senator, is also said to include an increase in crop insurance subsidies for farmers. The Congressional Budget Office says the bill would reduce benefits for eight-hundred fifty-thousand of the nation’s poorest households. The lines at food pantries have grown longer since last month after the expiration of the boost to food stamp benefit levels.
